Stewart's Rescue Story

A car was coming in the opposing lane and the speed limit on this road is 50 miles per hour. I had other plans in mind... but couldn't ignore this little dog's plight.

I hopped out of the car and called out: "Come here boy. Come here."

He ran right over to me and put his front paws in my lap. He was shaking very hard when I lifted him into the van, and pressed his head against me as I turned around and headed back home.

Knowing all S.P.A. foster homes were full we called Westview Veterinary Hospital to see if they could board this little dog while we searched for possible owners.

We notified the pound and placed a "Found" ad in the local paper.

We then created and distributed an email action alert with Stewart's photo and rescue story.

Meanwhile, Stewart received all vaccinations, was heartworm tested, dewormed... "THE WORKS".

A few days later, S.P.A. received an Adoption Application from Nancy. Her veterinarian gave her a stellar recommendation. Nancy said she would be willing to drive to Westview Veterinary Hospital to meet Stewart. It was a 1 1/2 hour drive and love at first sight for both Stewart and Nancy, and when I mentioned that I appreciated her interest in a middle-aged, not-so-good-looking dog Nancy "scolded" me and indicated I shouldn't refer to Stewart in that way. That's when I knew it was a match made in heaven.

Nancy and I made arrangements for a good day to deliver Stewart to his new home. Not only would he have two new human companions but he'd have two new canine companions, as well...

Star and Chloe.

Star wasn't exactly certain that she was ready for this new family addition.

As Nancy hugged Stewart she scolded me for referring to him as a "middle-aged, not-so-good-looking dog". I realized then that Stewart was in the loving arms he had been waiting for.

Chloe, however, seemed just fine, as she seemed to say, "Whatever you think."

My husband Terry and I picked Stewart up early in the morning at Westview Veterinary Hospital.

Ronelle had Stewart's Adoption Package Folder organized and ready, including shot book, medical records, etc. I added S.P.A. adoption information, took a photo of Terry, Ronelle and Stewart and we were off. On the road again...

Stewart seemed much more confident than he was the day I picked him up from the edge of the road.

He no longer shook. He now walked with his head high in the air, as if he KNEW he was "all that"... and then some. I wouldn't dare refer to him as a " middle-aged, not so-good-looking" dog again!

Stewart's new beginning!

It always amazes me how these castaway animals "transform". They seem to realize, somehow, that they are on their way to a new life... a new beginning... where they will be loved and appreciated.

These 'road trips' are the only vacation days Terry and I experience together, and I have to share that I wouldn't trade one of these days for a trip to anywhere in the world.

Looking into these animals' eyes when they are there... on the car seat beside us, on their way to their new home, to a family waiting to receive them with open arms... well, that's a feeling money can't buy.

Nancy loves her newly adopted doggie, Stewart. And I am happy to report that Star, although apprehensive at first, has become fast friends with her new boy, Stewart!
