SkillsUSA is an organization that allows the competition of trade schools to highlight and recognize the learned talents and skills of vocational students. Like an athletic event, there are winners and awards. The students competing train and practice and commit a significant amount of time to the task at hand.

SkillsUSA offers a vast variety of contests to allow a niche for every program to compete.

Even though there isn't a specific childcare competition, the VSCTC Early Childhood program is a part of Skills and has the opportunity to compete in multiple events such as opening and closing, extemporaneous speech, and American Spirit.

The American Spirit contest requires completion of a scrapbook/notebook documenting community service, patriotism and citizenship, and promotion of career and technical education projects that demonstrate a belief in the American way of life and the purposes of SkillsUSA.

Junior Alyssa Jobe is a student in the Early Childhood Education program at Vanguard Tech Center. Junior Jordan Hershey is a student in the Medical Aide program. Together, these girls chose to compete in the American Spirit project. They had to decide upon a worthy community service project that showcased citizenship and humanitarianism. The girls chose to help S.P.A. Ohio and they created the bulk of their impressive scrapbook around this endeavor.

Each SkillsUSA project requires an adviser. Sarrah Ottney, Vangard Tech Center Early Childhood Education Instructor and Medical Aide teacher, Mary Tyburski, offered support and guidance to the girls through each steps of their project, but the bulk of the work fell upon the students' shoulders.

When people learn that 2.4 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs—about one every 13 seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year, their minds seem to shut down, shift gears so they don’t have to think about this mass execution that can not be justified on any level in today’s world. When most feel the pain of this killing they seem to convince themselves that: it’s not their fault; that there is nothing they can do; that it must be necessary because it is what has always been done.

Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets. Spay/neuter is a proven way to reduce pet overpopulation, ensuring that every pet has a family to love them. That is why S.P.A. offers Low Cost Spay Neuter Vouchers to all those living in Sandusky County, thanks to participation of Fremont Animal Hospital and Westview Veterinary Hospital, who have supported S.P.A.’s efforts for the past eighteen years.

It seems as if most human beings experience some sort of hypnotic "disconnect" when it comes to killing friendly, healthy puppies and kittens who are indeed worthy of life. Euthanizing surplus animals doesn’t make sense. S.P.A. believes that this mass killing is not only immoral but unnecessary.

When people are encouraged to consider things about which they are ambivalent and have difficulty justifying, they experience a state of cognitive dissonance, which can lead to irrational rationalization, denial and self-deception.

In an effort to resolve these moral inconsistencies between their beliefs and socially accepted behaviors (i.e. killing friendly, adoptable puppies and kittens), people sometimes adjust their beliefs about what animals are capable of feeling.

SPA members were overwhelmed last Wednesday when we walked into the room at Vaguard Tech Center and saw the sum total of your amazingly helpful efforts!
